If you could've controlled where the 9/11 attacks hit the U.S. where would you have directed them?

Assuming you couldn't have stopped the attacks either. If you could've controlled where the 9/11 attacks hit the U.S. where would you have directed them?
rush limbaughs house. i hate that schmuck..If you could've controlled where the 9/11 attacks hit the U.S. where would you have directed them?
If u can't stop it having the building collapse sooner, would stop the people that went in to help from getting hurt but noone would have been able to escape the building. Rural areas would be ideal as far as hurting less people hence the lower population but, that was not what they were after. They would have kept trying until they got what they want.
middle of superior, or az desert
really low like on the 20th floor, so the building would collapse faster

The difference between controlling and 'directing'?

I just had a relationship end. She had a lot of arguements that I am controlling. I never said don't hang out with someone, or crap like that, however, I am in law enforcement and a pretty strong christian. So the things I am controlling about are basic things, almost as obvious as don't kill someone. I would try to tell her things along the lines of the law for her safet and for the safety of her kids. I did not want to control her, just keep her safe. So here's the question; At what point do women take a suggestion and twist it in their mind into some command? The difference between controlling and 'directing'?
If you are going around constantly telling her not to break the law or kill people, not only are you controlling, but disrespectful and obnoxious. I assume you also told her she could not get abortions and what not? Well, either give more examples or just accept you are controlling. You can't 'direct' a person. Especially one adult directing another. People should DIRECT people unless they're filming them. You can guide people (mostly just kids though).

You are controlling. Either accept it or change.

People don't need direction. If they want it, they will ask for it. Otherwise, you're trying to control them.

The very fact that you said not just this ONE woman, but the entire nation of women worldwide, 'twist' things...proves you are the one with the problem. I don't see why she represents the entire nation of women. Is she black, white? Does she represent all people of that colour too ? You have major issues.

Is it true that a woman is like an adult child who must always be controlled and directed by men?

I mean scientist have theorized that ';women preserves the infantile type ... physically, mentally and morally, woman is a kind of adult child ... in the domain of pure intellect it is doubtful if women have contributed one profound original idea of the slightest permanent value to the world.';

By McGrigor Allan, ';On the Real Differences in the Minds of Men and Women,'; Journal of the Anthropological Society 7 (1869): 210.Is it true that a woman is like an adult child who must always be controlled and directed by men?
Things have changed since 1869.

You wouldn't use medicines from that year, and you shouldn't use philosophies from that year either.

A lot of women scientists, from that time and years after, were shunned for their sex regardless of how great a contribution they made to DNA and X-rays, etc.

Even in 1869 women did a lot more than men realized. Many of them worked the fields and in factories, while raising babies and providing meals for their men. The only thing that made women mentally inferior back then was that they didn't know they were supposed to enjoy sex. Men were just egotistical and wanted to believe that women Needed to be dominated.

Now days, I think a lot of men are content to let the women take care of everything around the house. Out of my married friends most of the women manage the finances and make the major decisions. A lot of women earn more money than their husbands too.

My husband washes laundry and does dishes while I fix the trap in the bathtub and change the oil in the car.

I don't think any less of my husband. In fact I think it's wonderful that we work together to get things done.

Another guy I dated wouldn't let me work on my own car because he took it as an insult to his virility...even though I'm more mechanically inclined than him, even though I was trained by the military and he was trained by no one, he insisted that he had to better with cars than me.Is it true that a woman is like an adult child who must always be controlled and directed by men?
I beg to differ because I swear the grown man living in my house is worse then my children. So the answer to your question is a big fat NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heres one for ya. Get a group of men together and a group of women together send them out separate directions for a social outing. See how they behave and then tell me.....who needs supervision?
No ,it is not true. The men are the ones out there doing monkey jobs and coming come expecting the meal ready and the chores done, kinda reminds you of a child ,doesn't it?

Ps: does it feel good that this is coming from a twelve year old?
utter nonesence!Could a child work ,raise 4 children and have succesfull career for over 60 yrs?? I did and I am a woman !
And your main source is from 1869? Nice try. :)
Let's see...

besides Marie Curie, there's Sally Ride, Florence Nightingale, Louisa May Alcott, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Ada Lovelace, Grace Hopper, Clara Barton, Henrietta Swan Leavitt, Caroline Herschel, Louise Freeland Jenkins, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Golda Meir....

These women are NOT the exceptions. They are shining examples of women who have succeeded even when discouraged and told they could not possibly succeed by men.

I suggest you stop reading antiquated ramblings by biased authors whose pseudo-scientific writings reflected the chauvanistic viewpoint of their times. Use your own mind and eyes and see how men are every bit a woman's equal intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Women *are* physically different from men, true, but created in the same Image and every bit as valued.

One thing more... if you think we are the *weaker* sex? then try giving birth.
Ever heard of Marie Curie? I am guessing that your Dad beat and controlled your Mom. You can break the cycle of violence and teach your children to be respectful of all people.
one scientist? 1869? idiot
Is it true that male chauvanists keep their brains between their legs? The fact that an idiot over 100 years ago was too scared of the concept of equality to even consider the possibility that a woman might just be a match for him is not scientific proof. Look at:

http://womenshistory.about.com/od/cather鈥?/a> Catherine the Great, who doubled the size of her country

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Ni鈥?/a> Florence Nightingale, who revolutionized nursing and patient care

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Curie Marie Curie, who studied the effects of radioactivity and became the first woman (but not last!) woman to win the Nobel Prize.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_I鈥?/a> Queen Elizabeth the 1st, under whose reign the British empire went from a handful of islands to the Empire upon which the sun never sets

And that's just scratching the surface. There are hundreds if not thousands of other women who can honestly say that they made a difference that we still enjoy today.
When was the last time you had a decent conversation with a woman? 1869...hummm what year are we in????? Try getting your head outta yer a@@ and live alittle. You will never find a woman like that at this rate, my friend.
and the person saying this is a control freak,a woman batterer????1869 huh? how very up to date that is?
I thought that was how men were.
1869? Yeah right! That's the kind of thinking that men used to make women obsolete and it's not true. Do you feel that your mother is infantile and immoral? Does your father share that opinion of her? It's the strength of women that made men and without them they would have had repeated failings as providers, teachers, healers, and so on. Have you taken a couple of minutes and thought about all the responsibility that a woman has especially as a mother? She does everything! I hope you respect and love yours.
No, it's not true.

And 140 year old research is not cuttinjg edge science, either
BWAHAHAH!

ahh the good old 1869's.. when men were men.. and women were property.

This is one of the most ignorant statements out there.. but im sure that there are some men who will say ';woo yeah!';
If your bf has been giving you this crap I would ditch him very quickly. He will end up abusing you.
You are quoting psychology from the 1800s and think that we women are the ones in need of direction?

I am a woman, not a child in any way, and I certainly do not need to be controlled by anyone. You, on the other hand, are in some serious need of an education in women, in history, in anthropology, and in plain old common sense.

Does anyone actually believe that BB isn't controlled and directed?

I met 2 actors who 'claimed' they had been paid and advised as to their behaviours in season 2. Do ppl not realise its controlled? That viewing figures, phone line profits and 'popularity' are the motivation??Does anyone actually believe that BB isn't controlled and directed?
Well of course they are, Why do you think that all reality TV shows have conflict or ppl become enemies/friends. Before the series start the director and producer bring evryone nto a room and tell them each how they are suppose to act either loud, annoying, happy, grumpy, star critisising someone to become enemies e.t.c

';Reality TV'; is far from realityDoes anyone actually believe that BB isn't controlled and directed?
of course its all fake. people who go on it are just mad desperate idiots who are hungry for their five minutes of fame.

The devilWho directs and controls elections in the US?
I would tell you but I doubt you will accept the answer. Let's just say it's the same bunch who have pretty much controlled major events since around 1600.

Either the elected candidate is already ';in the pocket'; of these unseen power brokers or the elected candidate is immediately persuaded to change his ways. A close election can and has been altered. Ask JFK what happens if the president shows signs of rebellion and threatens to expose the evildoers.

  • How does an anti depressant help in controlling or directing emotions?

It controls brain chemicals that are inbalanced, or releases new ones to even them out.How does an anti depressant help in controlling or directing emotions?
An antidepressant is a medication designed to treat or alleviate the symptoms of clinical depression. Some antidepressants, notably the tricyclics, are commonly used off-label in the treatment of neuropathic pain, whether or not the patient is depressed. Smaller doses are generally used for this purpose, and they often take effect more quickly. Many antidepressants also are used for the treatment of anxiety disorders, and tricyclic antidepressants are used in the treatment of chronic pain disorders such as chronic functional abdominal pain (CFAP), myofascial pain syndrome, and post-herpetic neuralgia.

The main classes of antidepressants have similar efficacy, but the newer types are generally regarded to have a more benign side-effect profile and less risk of lethality if taken in overdose.

    Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

    Tricyclic antidepressants

    Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

    Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)

    Selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (NARIs)

    Dopamine reuptake inhibitors (DRIs)

    Opioids

    Selective serotonin reuptake enhancers (SSREs)

    Novel antidepressants

    Tetracyclic antidepressants

    Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors

Fluoxetine - of the SSRI class (Prozac, Sarafem, Fluctin, Fontex, Prodep, Fludep, Lovan)

Sertraline - of the SSRI class (Zoloft, Lustral, Apo-Sertral, Asentra, Gladem, Serlift, Stimuloton)

Venlafaxine - of the SNRI class (Effexor)

Citalopram - of the SSRI class (Celexa, Cipramil, Talohexane)

Paroxetine - of the SSRI class (Paxil, Seroxat, Aropax)

Escitalopram - of the SSRI class (Lexapro, Cipralex)

Fluvoxamine - of the SSRI class (Luvox, Faverin)

Duloxetine - of the SNRI class (Cymbalta)

Bupropion - of the DRI class (Wellbutrin, Zyban)

The therapeutic effects of antidepressants are believed to be related to an effect on neurotransmitters, particularly by inhibiting the monoamine transporter proteins of serotonin and norepinephrine. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) specifically prevent the reuptake of serotonin (thereby increasing the level of serotonin in synapses of the brain), whereas earlier monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) blocked the destruction of neurotransmitters by enzymes which normally break them down. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) prevent the reuptake of various neurotransmitters, including serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Although these drugs are clearly effective in treating depression, the current theory still leaves unanswered questions. For example, concentrations in the blood build to therapeutic levels in only a few days and begin affecting neurotransmitter activity immediately. Changes in mood, however, often take four weeks or more to appear. One explanation holds that the ';down-regulation'; of neurotransmitter receptors鈥攁n apparent consequence of excess signaling and a process that takes several weeks鈥攊s actually the mechanism responsible for the alleviation of depressive symptoms. Another theory, based on recent research published by the National Institutes of Health in the United States, suggests that antidepressants may derive their effects by promoting neurogenesis in the hippocampus.Recent research suggests that antidepressants act on transcription factors termed ';clock genes';, which also are involved in actions of drugs of abuse and possibly in obesityHow does an anti depressant help in controlling or directing emotions?
anti depressants (called SSRIs) control and balance the level of serotonin in your brain - the chemical that controls mood.

Not able to control which parts of vision i notice things not in consiously directed central vision?

I have developed a very weird problem - when im around a person/people I look at them in my periphery without meaning too, even if i am trying to look 180 degrees away from them. Some part of my brain becomes fixated on them and they become part of what im looking at, even if they are sitting all the way to the side of me and at the limit of my periphery (e.g on a bus) and im tryin to look exclusively straight ahead at a object in the distance. It also happens at home when I watch tv alone, I could be sitting there watchin tele then suddenly it will come to my attention the issues im having in public etc and then somehow i will select an object in my periperhal vision randomly and become fixated on it, and the only way i can get out of this mode is to try and forget about it (zoning out of it unknowingly while paying attention to the tele ) but when im around people they constantly move etc so i think this just perptuates the problem to an exttent (i think someone has already asked this question)...But on top of this problem, another, even WORSE problem has developed where when im talkin to people face to face, regardless of gender (btw im a heterosexual guy) and i end up noticing their private parts in my peripheral vision aswell being able to look at their face with my central vision at the same time whilst in conversation with them .Im not sure why im doing it, but i think its gotten worse in a very short space of time because I have gotten panikcy about whether people can notice me doing it and so i have limited conversation with anyone but close friends and family . This latter problem is what has now made me apprehensive about asking a psychiatrist about in person because its sounds so pathetically embarrasing, and ive only mentioned the horizontal peripheral vision issues thus far to my gp and friends. I just wanted to know from the members of this site, particulary women, if they can notice when men are engaged on their private parts with their periperhal vision while in convo with them (because im sure some men must do it from time to time, or so ive read), because i think this has made the problem persistent , maybe because of a loop created in panicky circumstances??? I'd appreciate any adivce at all, and thanks....Not able to control which parts of vision i notice things not in consiously directed central vision?
I think you should just chill out and relax. The more you're getting paranoid about this the more of an issue it's getting for you and the more you're noticing. Everyone finds themselves doing things like this occasionally, and once you notice something and get embarrassed about it it's quite hard to stop noticing lol. Particularly if it's something like the way a guys trousers are sticking out or something! Seriously, don't worry about it and once you stop thinking about it you'll stop noticing as much. It's completely normal. Not able to control which parts of vision i notice things not in consiously directed central vision?
You sound as though you're developing an obsessive compulsive habit. I think that a therapist might be a good idea. This isn't anything to be embarrassed about. I wish I could give you better advice about the root of your preoccupation but I have no background on you. Therapy might help.

How might Trotsky have directed Soviet Russia differently if he had gained control instead of Lenin?

Soviet Russia is often held up as a failure by the opponents of Communism. Its adherents usually retort that Russia was not a true implementation of the revolution. They frequently rally around Trotsky as a person they think would have gotten it right.

I am asking this as someone who has only brief familiarity of Trotsky, so background information (or links to it) are welcome. I am also interested to know the opinion of some of my socialist friends on this historical figure. How might Trotsky have directed Soviet Russia differently if he had gained control instead of Lenin?
first of all, you should have posted this in the history section.

it is also worth pointing out that, except in stalin's time, no one person held absolute power over the soviet union. lenin did in practice only because of his extreme popularity. in fact, he was not actually head of state during much of what is considered to be his rule. officially, that was a man named sverdlov, but he always sided with lenin.

as to lenin, he didn't rule for long enough. he technically ruled russia (or at least part of it) for 7 years, but there was a civil war going for 6 of them, and the civil war, combined with wwi, created a situation where society could barely sustain itself, and certainly not progress. during the height of the civil war, lenin's administration implemented a policy known as ';war communism'; in which resources would be seized from the populace by the government in order to keep the army going. this policy, while it certainly contributed to the communist success in the civil war, only compounded the economic depression. after the war, to stimulate economic growth, lenin reluctantly initiated the ';new economic policy'; which allowed for private enterprise and such in all but a few industries, maintaining government control of only small parts of the economy, like banks and railroads, effectively creating a socialist rather than communist country. lenin called the policy ';two steps backward to take one step forward'; and he meant to move away from it. still, the economy began to recover. lenin died soon after.

trotsky was a communist hard liner. he also had a strong stomach and saw the importance of the military (he was in charge of it for a while). he supported war communism and opposed the new economic policy. he also used brutal tactics in the civil war, instituting capital punishment in the army (which the bolsheviks themselves had abolished upon entering power) and even had soldiers wait behind the main battalion to kill deserters. the red army was composed of barely trained workers and peasants, so this was probably necessary, but it doesn't fit the romanticized version of trotsky that many cling to.

i think lenin was a better ruler than trotsky. i won't get into stalin, but its pretty close between him and trotsky.

as for your last question, almost every communist society so far has modeled itself on the soviet union. marx did not go into any detail describing the society that would rise from the worker's revolution, and so a communist society could hypothetically take about as many forms as a capitalist one. communist countries do occasionally have some problems with political turbulence, but i don't think stalin's rise to power has much to do with communism. lenin asked for an oligarchy when he died, and oligarchy's do tend to lead to dictatorship, but lenin also wrote denouncing almost all the contenders for power, including stalin. these last writings were composed on lenin's deathbed, and were played down by the government, since most people in it faced political ruin if it was discovered that lenin disapproved of them. but, lenin aside, communism itself has nothing to do with oligarchy, which is what caused stalin to gain power. How might Trotsky have directed Soviet Russia differently if he had gained control instead of Lenin?
My choice was ultimately between this one and the one provided by justgoodfolk. I think that justgoodfolk's was subject to ideological bias though I wanted specifically to see views such as his that inevitably would be so subject. In the end, mine was one of the two votes for the 'best answer'.

The big turning point in Soviet Russia came when Stalin seized power following the death of Lenin, and overturned many of Lenin's social reforms and largely tolerant social policies. Stalin ran the country by terrorizing its citizens, one of his first moves was to kill off, or exile all the revolutionaries and anyone powerful enough to challenge his power. Had Trotsky been able to get control instead of Stalin, he probably would have continued many of Lenin's policies, and perhaps the Soviet Union wouldn't have had such an oppressive society.
The same exact way he handled the Red Army. Very brutally.

Trotsky is a hero to some but really he is just a loser who lost out on power so Stalin gets the blame instead.

Trotsky was a fanatic of the worst kind. He just didn't get a chance to kill millions.

Trotskyites are the MOST annoying of all communists.
Typical living in denial. So I suppose they didn't implement the revolution correctly anywhere else that failed to become a paradise either, like China, Cuba, Zimbabwe, etc.?
Trotsky might have been a better choice than Lenin, maybe not, but I believe the main problem (concerning the eventual downfall) is one of a different nature. Although Trotsky and Lenin had their differences, they were still more allies than enemies, Stalin was the real problem in that respect!

Looks like we're covering Economics, Politics, History, and now Anthropology categories, with our answers.

My real answer to this question might (also?) seem a bit indirect, but it is a basic concept that I fully believe.

Real answer: It is illogical to expect a cooperative society (Communism) to compete, or to be able to compete, with a competitive society (Capitalism). It is impossible.

    Attempt at explanation follows:

    The basic facts:

Ideal Communism/Socialism, a condition of true individual equality, economically and socially, is simply an attempt at defining a practical cooperative society. The world has evolved into mostly an arbitrarily (';us'; vs ';them';) competitive (economically Capitalistic) society on a worldwide basis. ';Money'; is the main enabler of this, ';power'; being a synonym.

    An analysis:

A cooperative ad-hoc system (of any nature) cannot defeat a competitive system because of the basic definitions. i.e. If you cooperate with someone or thing that is competing against you - you are insured of losing; and to compete with that system requires that you become competitive, thereby losing because you have now changed your definition (joined ';them';).

    The primary issues/reasoning:

Cooperation is intrinsically a more basic life (not just human) trait than competition, however cooperative competition (tribe vs tribe, for instance) is a natural part (not necessarily adopted, but in our case it was) of early stages of development by any sentient life form. Once that life form (humans in our case) develops technology to the level of being able to have a practical effect on the survival of the species, it must make the unanimous conscious decision to universally adopt cooperation as the primary basis for everyday life. Competition must be relegated to non-arbitrary (agreed upon rules of engagement) uses, such as games/sports. This enables the highest chances of both the active (decreasing/preventing the effects of calamitous natural events) and passive (not self-destructing) continuation (survival) of the species. In a competitive society, it is simply a matter of waiting for the end.
OK. Thanks for keeping the Q open and my late response.

Everything starts with the economy and Marxism. Lenin and Trotsky were both Marxists and though they had their differences on some points at times they were united in the goal and means to achieve them. Trotsky disagreed with Lenin as people do but on most points eventually sided with Lenin.

When we say Stalin betrayed Marxism non Marxists often believe it's just rhetoric, influenced by our time were everyone constantly overuses big words just to make noise but it's not. Stalin and his oppressive regime declared communism had arrived while Marxism is a materialist idea. Not in the contemporary sense but in the sense that we believe people need the basic necessities to be in a free position to choose, that everything starts from people's needs, not from leaders or anyone elses ideas. That's the root of Stalin's betrayal with devastating consequences in every field which I will get into as far as the box allows me. Stalin's said here's socialism and those saying ';yeah but we don't have food'; were declared enemies and violently oppressed. “Law can never be higher than the economic structure and the cultural level conditioned by it.” (Marx)

One of my favorite passages in ';The revolution betrayed'; talks about this with a very concrete example in depth. Not gonna quote it all here though I wish I could because I want to talk about other aspects too but it is very important. Stalin is no Marxist, he threw Marxism overboard.

    ';The country can not get out of a famine of goods. There is a stoppage of supplies at every step. Children lack milk. But the official oracles announce: ’The country has entered into the period of socialism!’ Would it be possible more viciously to compromise the name of socialism?”';

    ';Socialism is a structure of planned to the end of the best satisfaction of human needs; otherwise it does not deserve the name of socialism. If cows are socialized, but there are too few of them, or they have too meager udders, then conflicts arise out of the inadequate supply of milk – conflicts between city and country, between collectives and individual peasants, between different state of the proletariat, between the whole toiling mass and bureaucracy. It was in fact the socialization of the cows which led to their mass extermination by the peasants. Social conflicts created by want can in their turn lead to a resurrection of “all the old crap.”';

    http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/…

Stalin's notorious oppression is rooted in his economic rejection of Marxism and substituting it with a planned economy where the people's needs are secondary to A the abstract concept economy and B the country's prestige. Marxism is about liberating people by changing the economic reality, Stalinism is about making people slaves

Stalin was also a nationalist who preached socialism in one country and not just pushed that anti Marxist idea in the USSR but worldwide leading to many disasters. The Cuban road, China, North Korea but also the subordination of the American working class to the Democratic party for example or to the social Democrats in Western Europe during the cold war and worst of all his lack of support for the German left and the non aggression pact with Hitler. All that comes from the idea of socialism in one country and co existence with the capitalist order. Stalin never supported the working class. Not in Russia and not in the rest of the world. That's because the interests of that working class were a threat to his regime, even more than any capitalist nation

I understand this part of Marxism is a hard sell to libertarian minded folks, they might not see a problem with socialism in one country or underestimate the importance of internationalism in Marxism. They might actually consider it positive to do socialism somewhere and indeed see the push for worldwide socialism as a threat as aggressive and the socialism somewhere co existing with other systems as a far more peaceful variant. However that's a misunderstanding of Marxism. Marxism is more than an economic system, more than a political way. It's the idea for mankind to evolve to the next level of civilization capitalism needs to be replaced. When we say like feudalism gave way to capitalism capitalism must give way to socialism that's because that's how we see it. Coming from that perspective it's like groups supporting freedom as we know it today in some countries but serfdom for some others. That's unacceptable and I hope that way of explaining sheds some light as to exactly how wrong that is

Of course the concrete results speak pretty loud as well. Stalin had his ';socialism in one country'; that lead him to see no problem in a non aggression pact and cooperation with Nazi Germany where Leon Trotsky remaining loyal to Marxism and his theory of permanent revolution made the analysis of fascism in the early thirties, years before the holocaust and world war, where he made a class analysis and offered the working class a strategy against the foul ideology of hate. Unfortunately his voice was too small but the record don't lie. Stalin's ffriend and time magazine man of the year years later Trotsky said no way and more important exactly why and how.

    http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/…

No one likes the guy who's right but says what no one wants to hear. That's Trotsky. Integrity, sharp mind, strong pen

With Trotsky the USSR would have remained free. Lenin was too important for the revolution and got sick allowing a bureaucracy to sideline him. Did he do wrong because of that? It definitely went wrong but I'm not sure if he's to blame. We can't foresee everything. As I understand it Stalin and his bunch dragged on Lenin's life so he was still the leader in name while they prepared their putch. I say too much power and responsibility with one person (Lenin) though the intentions behind that were probably noble enough.

Marxism starts from reality, Stalin was first and foremost a liar
NOTE: This has nothing to do with your question and is in response to your most recent email regarding the ‘economic calculation’ topic. I’m posting it here just because I’m too lazy to cut and paste it into multiple (probably four) emails. God, I hate that 1000 character limit... or I hate my longwinded oratory... or some combination thereof!

I have asked more than once (and you or I can find it if we want to look hard enough in my Q%26amp;A archives) if something like “I don’t want to pay for someone else” doesn’t REALLY mean, “let those that can’t pay die” and that kind of question easily solicits multiple responses of “YES, that’s exactly what I mean, if they don’t have jobs and they can’t pay, let them all die.” These hard core ideologies have their roots in Friedman, Mises and the like. It does not necessarily have anything to do with their actual words but much more to do with interpretation, and that is my BIG criticism of capitalist theory and theorists. I don’t really contend all that much with the personalities or their literal words so much as I am inspired to outrage by their omissions and the crazy interpretations that vacuum invites. As an example I might ask: Does calculating production and distribution from price and purchase information mean those that purchase nothing do not qualify for inclusion in any calculation, production or distribution? Does Friedman or Mises EVER preclude the crazy literal interpretation by preemptively answering that question before it occurs? Despite any vague reference to the assumed ‘charity’ that presumably proportionately accompanies wealth, in my estimation they do nothing to preclude the crazy literal interpretation, and along with all my other crazy literal interpretations, I have long since concluded that the specific intent of types like Friedman and Mises is in fact to actively promote precisely that kind of brutality. Yes, I am assuming the worst in these people, and you are assuming the best, but in any event, out of the speech and text these people leave behind, rises a hostile extremist mob chanting, “Why should I have to pay for someone else? Let them all die!” This stuff is extreme, it’s violent, it’s very real and it comes from SOMEWHERE, and I’m pretty sure that’s not Marx. I choose to assume the worst and form the craziest literal interpretation along with a host of fierce rugged (and violent) anti-‘collectivist’ ‘individualists’ that evidently share all my crazy literal interpretations. You (and other notable subscribers to capitalism on this site) are demonstrably not among that crowd and I hope this more clearly states what I try to say in other correspondence. That is why I consider our more ‘technically’ oriented exchanges more peripheral to my intended context. I am presenting the classic capitalist theory from the perspective of the crazy violent extreme interpretation which is not only a very real interpretation shared by millions, but a perfectly legitimate interpretation founded on the material of record as well. Maybe it would be more fair, honest and accurate to say your arguments simply aren’t crazy enough for my context but just like there is a very real contingent out there that interprets “(right to) the pursuit of happiness” as “no guarantee of happiness”, there is also a very real contingent that interprets “production and distribution determined by price and purchase information” as “if they don’t have jobs and they can’t pay, let them all die!”

I’ve edited and tweaked my ‘economic calculation’ question a tad and hope you stay with future postings to keep testing it.

If DNA only directs the synthesis of protein, how can it be said that DNA controls all of the activities of the cell, including those which don鈥檛 obviously involve proteins?

If DNA only directs the synthesis of protein, how can it be said that DNA controls all of?
All metabolic activities are controlled by enzymes. Peptide hormones are direct gene products. If DNA only directs the synthesis of protein, how can it be said that DNA controls all of?
DNA doesn't controla ll the activities of a cell, except that it makes them all possible. It directs the synthesis of RNA, not protein, but RNA is translated into protein, and proteins control the activities of a cell that don't involve proteins, largely as enzymes that catalyze the formation of those non-protein molecules. There are certainly exceptions in which regulatory RNA molecules control this or that, but those are encoded by DNA as well.
Because proteins are essential parts of organisms and participate in EVERY process within cells, directly or indirectly. Many proteins are enzymes that catalyze biochemical reactions and are vital to metabolism. Proteins also have structural or mechanical functions, such as actin and myosin in muscle and the proteins in the cytoskeleton, which form a system of scaffolding that maintains cell shape. Other proteins are important in cell signaling, immune responses, cell adhesion, and the cell cycle.
I think that if you try to find an activity of a cell which does not involve proteins, you will not find any.

How do I detach myself from my fiances controling mom who directs and dictates or at least trys to control eve

There is an old and good saying ~ begin as you mean to go on.

Now is the time to stand up for yourself. I know from personal experience that going along with a controlling in-law for peace and quiet only leads to more demands for you to do more, be more and give more.

Be polite, but be firm. Say ';No thank you'; to offers, say 'I'm sorry, I cannot do that'; to requests and ';I would rather do it this way'; to suggestions.

Do NOT say ';Oh, I will think about it'; because that will be considered a weakness and the in-law will push at the weakness until you give in.

Do not be simply obstructive. For example, if you are asked to go to their home and have another engagement, decline and say you have another engagement. Do not alter your position. However, if you are invited and are free, agree to go and take a bunch of flowers or other gift, praise the decor and food, and comment that you are so glad that you have been free to come to such a lovely home for such a pleasant evening. Demonstrate that you are an honest person not simply a troublemaker.

Always give due courtesy to your in-laws as the parents of your fiancee, for example, comment that one of his best features is his politeness, and that this is something that can only be taught in a home that values such things. In this way you show you have respect for the in-laws, so that when you will not be pushed they know it is from strength of character, not stubborness.

If you marry your fiancee and want to have an enjoyable life, now is the time to earn your in-laws' respect. Things might be rough at first, but as long as you remain polite and above all respectful, you will earn everyone's respect and admiration.

If you find you cannot be as strong as a rock, do only as much as you can without feeling helpless and controlled.

Your in-laws can be your best friends, and they may one day be the grandparents of your children, you want their friendship and respect, but you do not owe them your life.

Good luck and every best wish :-)How do I detach myself from my fiances controling mom who directs and dictates or at least trys to control eve
You need to stand your ground NOW or else it will be worse after you two are married.

Your fiance needs to step up to the plate as well and draw the line and cut the apron strings. How do I detach myself from my fiances controling mom who directs and dictates or at least trys to control eve
Well going through your fiance to her is not going to work at all. He'll nevere tell her exactly what you said no matter how unoffensive it may be. Next time she tries to offer her advice. Say ';you know I really appreciate the help and everything but we are adults now and we would like to be able to experience that life without all the added pressure from our parents.'; Or something along those lines. Good luck honey cuz my mother in law is the same way. After 3 years she has backed off but my husband still comes home with attitude when he visits with her.
I think your response should go with your real personality. for me, one day i took her to lunch and said basicly. that i love her son if not the same way than eqally to her, and seeing how i would never tell how to mother. she shouldnt tell me how to be me. of course she didnt take it the best way, because i gave her the worst first. after i sat and listened to what she felt was wrong, and had her talk about her experience with life, and when she saw i was interested she back off of me and her son, because she saw patential. i'm not saying do the same thing. but impress her with your strengths because honestly no mother will accept any woman who cant come to her as a woman. she'll just put you in a childs place the same place she keeps her son
I'm afraid you can't-if you want him she is part of the deal. All you can do is change your reaction to her ways. Good luck.
By detaching yourself from your fiance. You are in for a lot more trouble if you marry him; unless you are strong enough to cut her off from your lives.
Tell your mum to mind her own business.

You and you alone should be minding your funds. How would she like it if you told her what to do with her money? How the tables would turn!
Try using the sh*t sandwich technique when she offers advice.

Say something nice - (for example ';thankyou for your concern......';)

The sh*t - (for example ';but you are sticking your nose in where it is not wanted and I want you to stop';)

    Say something nice ';I'm sure we'll work it out, it's great to have you here.';

Be respectful but don't compromise on your values.

Do you think freedom should be controlled or directed?

This came out in my critical thinking course and I wonder what might other ppl think

Just in case anyone might not agree with the topic, please tell me where to put itDo you think freedom should be controlled or directed?
Doesn't ';controlled freedom'; seem contradictory to you? It's like saying, ';You are free to do anything you want to - as long as it is one of the approved activities.'; ';Directed freedom'; is just as contradictory.

So, do I think that freedom should be curtailed or limited? At the point where your exercise of freedom impinges on my freedom or safety, a limit should be placed, yes.

In other words, I'm in favor of limits set to protect me from your stupidity or dangerous behavior.

On the other hand, as long as what you are doing *only* effects you or your life, no matter how idiotic or destructive, I believe in and would defend your freedom to do it.

    Breaking parental controls on Direct-tv?

Ok here's the deal, i am 15 years old and my stepmom put controls on the tv. I can not watch anything rated tv-14 or R. I can ask and usually my dad will let me watch something. But i think it's ridiculous. I found out the first code at first, their anniversary, how creative.

I do have one 13 year old sister and a 12 year old stepbrother and 3 year old half sister. But what is dumb is, my stepmom wont even let me watch something by myself. And i think my sister is old enough to watch at least tv-14.

My half sister doesnt even pay attention to the tv, unless it is one of her shows.

Ok so i know there are ways to break the code. For code geniuses out there, please help :)Breaking parental controls on Direct-tv?
I heard that if you punch in 1 2 3 4 three times it unlocks the parental control or 0000!Breaking parental controls on Direct-tv?
You said it yourself, you are 15. When you are 18 and can live on your own and pay for the satellite subscription, you can decide. At the moment, your parents decide. It's their house - their rules.
Well, you would usually call the TV company.

Look it up in the phone book whatever brand it is
The parental controls are put in place for a reason - your parents do not want certain programs being viewed without them around. If they wanted to let you have free reign they would have either told you the code or not changed it when you guessed the first one.

There is no way around the code. The only way it can be reset is to call DirecTV and verify (by answering a lot of questions) that you are, in fact, the account holder (not a spouse, not a child, not a cousin, not a best friend), and the CSR ALWAYS documents who the caller is stating they are (or if they sound male/female, young/old) so even if you do manage to get them to reset the password you WILL be caught.

Molecule within seed that controls and directs reproduction?

Can someone tell me what the molecule within a seed which controls and directs reproduction is called?Molecule within seed that controls and directs reproduction?
    DNA

What's the difference between controlling and directing?

Someone who is controlling is one who spends their time trying to do everything, because they can't trust anyone else to do things their way. Often, they are micromanagers - maybe they delegate some work, but they rarely delegate the responsibility. When they do delegate work, they are always there watching over your shoulder, usually criticizing everything you do.

Someone who directs is one who delegates work and responsibility, but they keep ultimate responsibility for the final result. They often give work to others and keep all of those involved on track - making sure they meet their goals and that they meet them on time. While they expect individuals to do their part, they often allow those individuals to do things their way - basically allowing them the freedom to decide how they will achieve their goals. The director only gets involved in the smaller details if something goes wrong.

Comparing them both is pretty simple if you think of them this way:

Imagine a chef in a 5-star restaurant. The chef is ultimately in charge of the finished product - the plated food that makes it out of the kitchen. The chef, if he/she is controlling, will only allow others to do a very small, insignificant amount of work. And, the chef is constantly watching over their shoulder telling them what to do and when, instead of allowing that person to work freely and unencumbered. The work takes longer as a result, and the chef feels overworked because he/she can't trust the others to make the right choices.

A chef who knows how to direct will have one or more sous chefs. Those sous chefs will be given a task to do, and the chef will only lightly monitor what the sous chefs are doing - mostly judging the final outcome of the sous chef's work before it gets plated. They more or less work together as a team, each with their own responsibility to contribute to the final product: a delicious meal that tastes as great as it looks.

I think it all comes down to trust. The directing person has trust that the members of his/her team can do what they are assigned. The controller doesn't trust anyone to complete their tasks well and will often spend more time looking over everyones shoulder and ';helping'; them by telling them how to do everything than actually doing any real work themselves. They are often martyrs: ';oh, we had such a hard time tonight. Tons of orders came in but I had to spend all my time correcting everything!';What's the difference between controlling and directing?

while they say most birth controls are 99% effective there's still that 1%, and honestly a lot of it depends on your body. my friend got pregnant twice on birth control, once she was taking the pill, and once she was taking the depo shot. if pregnancy isn't ideal for you right now you should still always use a condom as a means of extra prevention.
Nah, you are all good. Pregnancy, nah. You should be fine.

Ohh but you might want to get tested for STDs which I personally would be much more worried about. But hey, it's just life - so what if you get something you can't get rid of.
Birth Control is over 99% effective if taken as directed. If you are taking your pills at the same time every day at the same time and not skipping doses, there is a very very very slim chance that you will ever get pregnant.
Yes, but if you are taking the pill as directed, it's a very small chance.

Can anyone suggest a web site i can use for refference? Can anyone direct me to a web page for basic outboard motor (with controls) installation/repair?
I not sure, but, it not hard. Remove the old and controls. Usually you disconnect the cables from engine and pull out so you not open the control box.

New engine to install. IF, the mount holes not line up you need to get a Wood Dowel Rod (Hardware store, Wal-Wort etc.), cut to thickness of transom and coat with a good rubber caulk/silicon and plug the holes, be sure you have your rubber covering inside and out to prevent water. To line up you new install, set it close to center of transom and take a measuring tape. measure from bottom left of motor mount corner to bottom left corner of boat. Then check the right. Move engine left/right to center. If, the old engine was centered it should cover the old holes. Then tighten it up, or snug and drill your new mounting bolt holes. Cover the bolts with your Rubber sealer and slide them through. On the inside put a little rubber on the washers and bolt it down. Run your cables and connect the controls. Then see if the old control box holes line up. I, not I usually use one of the old holes and drill one new to bolt my control box.Can anyone direct me to a web page for basic outboard motor (with controls) installation/repair?

Will I be able to do damage control on my own case of ringworm while still in direct contact with my kitten?

A few weeks ago I tried to be a Good Samaritan and brought home a five week old kitten who had gotten separated from his mother and litter. The kitten had ringworm, and it progressed to be pretty severe before I was able to recognize what it was. I was completely symptomless until a few days ago, when two rogue spots showed up on my arm and groin area.

Since then, I've treated the kitten and the room:

    - I've taken the kitten to the vet and gotten his hair clipped, and also gotten LymDyp and an antifungal spray to help him get over his case--I'm fairly confident he'll be fine in a few weeks.

    - I've also thrown away what couldn't be disinfected in my room and bleached the floors, Lysol-ed the walls and couches, and washed exposed fabrics in vinegar and baking soda (since most of them are colored).

BUT the problem is I can't put him anywhere else (I'm a renter in a house of six other people). My two spots have multiplied to two dozen or so all over my arms, legs, and neck. I've tried Lotrimin, vinegar, and clear nail polish, and so far not only has it just spread further, the itching has become a constant burn.

I don't have the money to go see a physician and get a prescription, so any tips on how to kill the fungus would be great, but even more importantly, is it only being perpetuated because I'm in contact with the kitten? Will I not be able to ever get better because I have to take care of him in my bedroom? Does anyone have tips? Will I be able to do damage control on my own case of ringworm while still in direct contact with my kitten?
Isn't it the most annoying thing? I've had it, too. I used to work at a veterinary clinic and it seemed I always had at least a couple lesions somewhere on my body. For me, it always cleared up with Lamisil cream, but it always seemed to take several weeks before I'd notice any improvement. I don't know how long you've been using the Lotrimin, but if it hasn't been very long, maybe you should just keep at it and be patient. But if it's been a while and you're not noticing any improvement at all, then I think you should try something else. I'm giving you a link to a web site that explains A LOT about ringworm (causes, treatments, etc.). When you get to the site, make sure you read the ';Patient Discussion'; section at the bottom of the page. I read a few comments that people posted and they told about what treatments worked for them (without going to a doctor for a prescription). So maybe some of their suggestions will work for you, too. Anyway, here's the link.

  • I hate direct debit, because they aren't under your control - your views?

In the past you could set up 'standing orders' for regular fixed payments to go out of your bank account, these have been almost entirely replaced by 'direct debits' whereby someone can take what they like when they like, with the promise that any errors will be put right quite quickly.

Public sector incompetence in IT, raises its head again, when this went wrong.

I think DD should be abolished, with standing orders replacing them.

    Your views?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/humbe鈥?/a>I hate direct debit, because they aren't under your control - your views?
Direct debit is a dual edged sword. The upside: it is convenient and expedites the collection process for the lender. It also ensures that you never miss a payment that would adversely affect your credit rating.

The downside: as a consumer, if you run your budget tight...you can get caught in a situation that can cause an overdraft to your account. Resulting in expensive fees, time on the phone, and a time suck on your day.

If you are seeking to retain control, however like the convenience of not issuing checks..I recommend that you stop the direct debit and use a bank that offers a robust ';online bill payment'; system.

Upside, you retain control of when bills are paid. The bills are debited from your account and in most cases received by the payee electronically. You can monitor the activity to ensure against error. The best part, banks are more apt to provide you provisional credit for their error and refund any fees. Whereas, if a creditor pulls their payment a bit early..you are pretty much at their mercy.

If you do not have the option of using an electronic bill pay and you must have the payment directly debited by the lender, vendor, etc. Your only solution is to ensure that you retain a buffer in your account, either use a line of credit for overdraft purposes or keep a few bucks..just in case.

It sucks, but unfortunately, as consumers we do not have control of these issues when they occur, but we can implement strategies to safeguard ourselves.

Good luck.I hate direct debit, because they aren't under your control - your views?
I totally agree with you and refuse to have them. I got caught out by a DD when a company took too much money. It took me 6 months to get the money back, even with the DD guarantee. Most companies who ask for them normally will allow you to set up a SO instead if you request it.

I'm currently in dispute with my local council who insist that I set up a DD to pay council tax. I have told them that I'm willing to have a SO but they won't allow that. Because of this they class me as a ';cash payer'; which means that my money has to have cleared into their account by the 1st of the month. I don't get paid until the 1st so there's no way I can pay them 3 days earlier. This has resulted in a violation notice (I've paid three days late) so they are now threatening me with civil action. B@stards!!
DD are easy convienent and regulated. You ARE in control of them, as they should only be taken when you own the money involved. Standing orders cannot changes amounts on their own so you would always be calling the bank. If you have aproblem with DD its because you cant really afford the product or service you have asked for....
Standing orders are totally diffferent to DD, and they are still widely available.

With DD, the creditor has to apply for it monthly, and as such, can be called on any day and for any amount.

SO are for a set amount on a set day for a set duration, dictated only by the account holder.

If offered DD, say no and ask for their bank details for SO.
I'm with you 100% on that. I've been screwed by an error which ruined my finances for a month while it was sorted. Never again.
    Don't use Direct Debit then.

They cannot do it if you don't authorize it in advance.
They are totally under your control. You can cancel any time you like. If you instruct your bank or building society to cancel a direct debit, and they fail to do so, then in law they have to re-imburse you.

Direct debits are payments for money you owe. Sometimes the amount can vary, e.g. telephone bills. Sometimes they remain the same,e.g. for magazine subscrptions. If a fixed direct debit changes, e.g. a magazine price goes up, then the supplier has to give you notice affording you the opportunity to cancel or otherwise.

Very often, if you opt to pay bills by direct debit, you will often get a discount. Take BT for example. If you don't pay by direct debit, they slap on an extra 拢4.00 or 拢5.00 for payment by other means, e.g. a cheque, or cash at the Post Office. I'm all for direct debits, they save me money and are toally under my control.
I despise them,Numerous bank charges on a debit due out on a monday which seem to go out on a friday previous but dated on my online banking as the monday. Also the bank are to quick to blame you before putting your account right.

    USAF pararescue and combat control....both look like awesome carrers but which one gets more ';direct action';

    as in combat....

    thanks alotUSAF pararescue and combat control....both look like awesome carrers but which one gets more ';direct action';
    As a former PJ way back in the early 80's....I can say the combat controllers will see more action. Back then both went through the same ';weeding out'; training. 90% of my class quit. Started with 30 or so and graduated 5. The roles have changed from what I understand even moving the schools out of Texas. For what their current roles are I couldn't say. Don't expect to go in and be either, I don't think its something you can just join the AF and be promised that job. Most guys cross trained from another career field. I started as a cop.USAF pararescue and combat control....both look like awesome carrers but which one gets more ';direct action';
Your kinda talking about 2 different things. Combat controllers got the most action in the early part of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now PJ's get most of the action. Combat controllers are going to go in and do air strikes and blow something up without anybody knowing before hand. And if all goes well they egress out without anyone knowing they were there. But if they get caught - they will be in one hell of a fire fight wayyyy behind enemy lines. PJ's on the other hand are sent in for various reasons - one being a fire fight broke out and they need more help, especially medically trained personnel - but also they are usually part of a quick reaction team that helps to go secure areas. So like if a helicopter goes down they are dropped in and provide cover to the team and usually just stand around and tell locals to keep moving - kinda like crowd control.
PJ's don't usually get direct action, they don't typically seek to engage the enemy, they are pararescue with the toughest training in the military, combat controllers get direct action because they are foward air controllers to call in air strikes for infantry or spec ops they are always on the ground with the special forces and engage in combat with them

for all intents and purposes they are infantry
Well first of all....what is your motivation? It sounds to me like you might be an action junkie. I do not mean to insult or appear disrespectful but you may be pursuing these careers for the entirly wrong reasons.

    Pararescue is a job that involves being on standby to provide rescue support for downded aircrews. The training is as intense as any in any branch of the military. It is often overlooked because it does not get the hype and the coverage of many of the more glamourized branches of the military...i.e. Navy Seals, Green Berets etc. Pararescue people are not directly involved in ';combat'; ops because their focus is rescue and not target acquisition and elimination. Conbat Control is really just front line Air Traffic Controllers...intense training as well but no direct ';combat';

So if you are a true ';junkie'; I wouldn't go after either....join the Navy and try to become a seal......oh and BTW.....good luck....90 % wash from Pararescue...about 80 % from seals......and so on
Infantry in the Army and the Marines receive the most ';direct action';.

PJ/CCT are not conventional warfighters, they are Air Force special operations.
both para rescue mission is to get downed piolets behind enemy lines. combat control calls in airstrikes

When directing a film, how much control does the director have over the screenplay and movie sets?

I am 14 years old, and I hope to become a film director someday. I was wondering how much control does a director take over the screenplay, or making changes to the screenplay. How close do they have to stick to it or how much they can drift away from it and take more creative control themselves. I also wanted to know how much creative control a director has on designing movie sets; how close they work with the crew, stuff like that. ThanksWhen directing a film, how much control does the director have over the screenplay and movie sets?
Directors are practically head of the show, ranked only under the producers. The screenwriters many times write the script, and let go of all rights to it, leaving the director to freely change any and all dialogue within it. Unfortunately, there are cases where that isn't a good thing, but...

To answer your question, man, the director's vision remains intact during the production... as long as the producers agree. :)When directing a film, how much control does the director have over the screenplay and movie sets?
Near total control, there are budget considerations that can limit what can be done, as well as restrictions on locations, hours that can we worked in a day due to various reasons, and any number of other things that can pop up before, during and after shooting the movie, but yes, in general, he/she has almost total control on almost every topic involved in the creation of a movie.
i think all that is up to the studio. they probably let some directors i.e. spielberg have more freedom than other lesser known ones

Should spanking ever be used as a control method or only as a direct consequence for a known infraction?

For example suppose you're nine year old son is caught playing with matches and you have explained the danger of it warned him repeatedly and warned him what would happen if he did it again ..I see that a sound spanking is warranted in that case .. But doesn't it get to be all about control and a power struggle when lets say the same boy neglects to do a choir and each time its neglected he is spanked for it ..Should spanking ever be used as a control method or only as a direct consequence for a known infraction?
I would use it in the first case, but not in the second. In the second case I would withhold a favorite activity until the chore is done. No watching TV or video games until your room is clean, etc.Should spanking ever be used as a control method or only as a direct consequence for a known infraction?
I think a 9 year old is a little too old to be spanked. I disagree that spanking a child is ';child abuse'; though. The reason kids nowadays are so ill-mannered is because parents are so scared to discipline them and get in trouble. Kids have their parents on a leash and will do whatever they want. If you don't train your kids early enough that you are the boss they will always take advantage of you.

Anyway, to answer your question, I think it should be used as a ';direct consequence for a known infraction';. If you let that get out of hand, though it will become a control method. You don't want your child to fear you, but you also don't want them to think they wont be punished for bad behavior.
I just took a class about possitive parenting and you don't need to spank at all.

Sit down with your son and discuss his chores.

Did he help choose the list?

Ask him what the consequences should be if he doesn't do his chores.

Talk about dangerous behavours that he has been doing.

Discuss what the consequences can be and how you feel about it.

Ask him what the consequences should be if he does a dangerous behaviour. You have to be comfortable with any of the consequences.

As kids get older they want to feel like they get to make choices. The more they feel in control the less they feel they need to be testing boundaries. You still run the show, you just guide the areas you are happy for him to make choices in.
Spanking should be the disciplinary action of last resort. If you have used up all your other options and the behavior continues, then a spanking might be order. But you also need to consider the scope of the infraction. Spanking a child who keeps playing with matches is different than resorting to a spanking for a kid who won't eat his vegetables.
I agree. Taking away video games, television or playtime with friends is a much better control over behavior than spanking. However, I have an 8 yr old child that has been in time out, had activities taken away, had to pay chore money to his sister, all as punishments. Spanking has been the only deterrent for some of this unacceptable behavior. Until you raise wild tail boys never say never. :)
Spanking is a lot of fun. But for neglecting chores I would just withhold a privelage, like the phone or dinner. I mean, I once got hit with a flashlight for not cleaning my room fast enough. It didn't speed things up any.

But, spanking is great for noisy kids. It makes you feel better when you beat them silly. Now they're crying for a good reason!
Yes. A smack used properly speaks volumes. Three hours of ';reasoning'; with your 4 year old is not going to stop them dying if they are about to put their hand in a socket.

People love to replace the word ';smack'; with ';hit';as they think it strengthens their case.
Put the matches and other such dangerous objects far out of reach in the first place, and hitting is just stupid and just as immature as a small child.
NEVER EVER spank. Hitting doesn't solve any problems.
Personally I don't see a problem with spanking, but it does become an issue if you are using it to control the child. You can't control anyone, not even a child. They have a mind and personality of their own and you should always try to resolve the issue based on level. For example, child plays with fire first offense...warning. If they continue to play with fire, then a spanking would be in order. If he doesn't do his chores I don't see a reason to necessarily spank him for that, unless he starts back talking and disrespecting the parent. I would think that each time the child doesn't do a chore you should take something away. I.E. ';If you don't help with the dishes, no video games or T.V. until it is done.'; Hope this helped.
My daughter is 22 now and she was never spanked as she was growing up - I can't imagine an adult needing to hit a child as a way to enforce discipline. There are so many other things you can do, and children come in different packages - some are completely immune to getting hit, and others fear it irrationally. I have also had four foster children in my home, and while we would never have hit them anyway, it is illegal in our state for foster children to be spanked (we are in California, I don't know if all states have this rule, I would imagine not, since some still allow corporal punishment in schools). That the state labels it illegal is pretty telling that it probably isn't an appropriate method of discipline.

I know some people think not allowing spanking at all is extreme, but I was one of those kids who responded with extreme fear. I have one parent that I still don't have a relationship with today because that was his method of enforcing order. I'll never think of him as anything except that guy who might hit me.
i dont have kids....but i do have 12 nieces and nephews and have helped raise all of them....i never spanked any of them i either set them on the couch or put them in the corner with there nose touching the wall.....they cant sit or doa nything else....then after that they didnt do what they had done wrong again....hope that helps!

This should answer all the questions...

I'm directing a group of children. I want to do a musical, but which should I do? How do I keep control too?

I was recently offered by a friend to direct an acting group I have been a part of for 7 years. I'm very excited about it and can't wait to start. There are a few probelms though. Since this is the 50th Anniversary of this program, we want to stage a musical, but we don't know which one to do, and how to possibly do it with a bunch of 3rd - 9th graders. Putting on a show with kids that young with music, dances, and lines can get tense, and I speak from experience.

Another problem I have is controlling kids. I would like to think I'm a leader, even though I'm probably not. Sure I like kids, but I have a hard time keeping them under control, and getting them to obey orders and such. It's a major problem I would like to solve but I don't know how.

This is going to be alot of fun and a great challenge, so I'd like these problems solved before I start. Thank you!!I'm directing a group of children. I want to do a musical, but which should I do? How do I keep control too?
I'd like to explore this with you, beyond here,,, through e mail, simply because I have been involved for so many years.

You don't state your age, and what relation you might have with any principals,,,especially mature individulas.

When I read this the first time my first thought was WIZARD OF OZ.

Without great elaboration here I'll offer why.

First of all, you need good back support, meaning stage mgr's and ASM's... You will likely have stage mothers stumbling over each other,,, No offense,,, a 3rd grader might need MOM close.

Costumers certainly can improvise anything from anything, if they are credible. Additional elistment of volunteers to act as anything you need,,,are essential,,IE: Kid Wranglers.

    Now my rational.

This is a story that can utilize ';Adult'; types as well as ';Munchkins,,,smiles.

Depending on your direction, and your Plan as it's developed, the youngest can be BIT players, merely on stage to ACT as they do, even out of any costume. They need not BE ON for long periods, nor have any specific lines, but certainly can be TAUGHT to sing along, and create the major basis for the environmemnt, beyond the Principals.

The 5 truly main characters can easily be teens, and makeup works wonders,,, as it might if you had to have the prelude scene in Kansas, and near the final curtain.

Actually if I was designing this, I'd drop most of the black and white lead in,,, and drop them into OZ within the first few minutes. Everyone knows the story anyway.

You might consider enlisting at least one real ADULT to be the WIZARD.

If I currently had this opportunity, I'd press on with the entire budget, and create a performance that anyone can sit through.

Steven WolfI'm directing a group of children. I want to do a musical, but which should I do? How do I keep control too?
Hi, there is a bunch of ';broadway for kids'; musicals. You can search them like that. I have personally presented Aladin with kids from 4 to 10 years old and it was great!

If you want me to help you step by step through this expirience or have some questions about how to organize or calm them; or about performance, dance and singing feel free to add me to your msn or send me an e-mail. najlamich@hotmail.com
You might try the Sound of Music which had kids in it. As for control, here are a few things that will help. Have a detailed plan for your time. Have a definite place for the kids to sit when they are not involved. With younger kids, compliment the ones who are doing the right thing. If older students need to be corrected, pull them aside instead of yelling in front of others. Have the music recorded so that you can watch the kids unless you have a pianist. Good luck!
When I was helping out at a children's theater backstage, we would LITERALLY duck tape the littlest ones to the wall. It's not as drastic as it sounds...we would just put a couple of little pieces on each shoulder and maybe on the side of their legs.

Keeping in mind that my partner and I were about 20 at the time, we had other unorthodox methods, as well. We would, for example, tie girls' shoelaces together to teach them to take little steps for their roles in a Chinese play we were doing.

As a REAL teacher now (alarming as that may sound) there is something to be said for not being too dictatorial. We were basically kids leading kids, so we took the big sister approach. When you need to lay down the law, if you have to raise your voice, the kids take you more seriously if it's a rare occurence. Weird, but that's what I've experienced!
You must have a reliable and organized right-hand person -Stage Manager/Assistant Director. This is a must. He/she can run scenes, manage props, assist the cast with entrances/cues, and keep the peace backstage while you focus on directing.

You should write out a calendar of what scenes you will be running each night- all the kids may not need to be there every rehearsal. As you progress, the schedule may need to be altered, but at least you have a structure and plan.

Obviously, you will need to know the script inside and out before rehearsals begin, and have a clear and strong vision. Kids will need to be directed very specifically.

You should let everyone know upfront, parents and kids, the kind of dedication and focus that will be required. A general rehearsal and production overview should be on the audition form.

The parents should have to state any potential schedule conflicts on the backside of the sheet. I guarantee that more scheduling conflicts will mysteriously pop up after you have cast the show.

With kids, I would recommend having one or two ';alternates'; to cover roles. You may want to allow the understudies to do one of the shows as a reward for their commitment.

You should have a list of the scenes posted backstage to help the kids keep track of the show, and be on time for entrances.

Get the parents involved making costumes, painting sets, doing box office, etc.

I would recommend ';You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown'; or ';Alice in Wonderland';.

I hope this helps a little. Best of luck.
    Go to www.childrentheatreplays.com/playlist.ht鈥?br>

    There list is long!!!!!!!!!
My advice is to look at Annie Jr. or Once on this Island Jr. and do one of those. Secondly, there's a great book on discipline called, ';Discipline in the Secondary'; (since you have teens in there) that will give you great tips on group management and give you a peek into the psychology of a hormonal teenager.

Make SURE that you prepare AS MUCH for the STRUCTURE of the rehearsals as you do the CONTENT of the rehearsals, or your life will be difficult. Make sure you know where EVERY SINGLE KID is going to BE and what they are going to DO at every second. If they don't have anything to do there, the only option is for them to get in trouble, so DON'T have them there except when they absolutely HAVE to be.

Good luck! You'll need to schedule a week off of work after closing night. . . . .

  • Can someone crack the parental controls on Direct TV? 4 out of 4 times the kid has found out the code!!?

The passcode on Direct TV parental control is reset and each time the kid figures it out! Number combinations that he should not even be able to guess at and is able to each time. Is there some crack/hack that people can use to retrieve the passcode? Can someone crack the parental controls on Direct TV? 4 out of 4 times the kid has found out the code!!?
I think it's about time to crack/hack his @ss. He is disobedient and disrespectful. If he can't watch the TV in a responsible manner then he shouldn't be allowed to watch it at all until he can learn to stick to appropriate programs. New codes don't seem to be the answer here. Can someone crack the parental controls on Direct TV? 4 out of 4 times the kid has found out the code!!?
haahah if your kids are like secret agents they might be able to do that but i bet you they just sit and try to figure it out with different combinations of numbers.
Why is the kid allowed to watch TV any more then????? What happened to parental responsibility? If the kid keeps getting the code, then ban him from the damn TV all together!!! His problem is not listening to his parents! That should be punished!!!
if your kid is so young that he/she should not be able to guess the code, then i doubt they are capable of code breaking/hacking. I would recommend calling the cable company and see if they can help, it may be a fault in the parental control programming on your box
hehe, i'm sure they just tried every single one :P

either that or you are making it something you can remember and they are guessing it..
wow u got a smart kid! Are u writing it down some where and the kid is finding it? Trying doin a number thats hard and hide it some where he wouldnt guess where it is. But if he has a enough time he can go through all the numbers and figure it out..try not to repeat numbers.
well when i was little and we had codes that losked stuff i wanted i was determined and i would sit and figure it out
LOL i cracked my code in 2 seconds flat.

i just guessed easy numbers like 4444, 1222, 9999 or whatever

anyway the hard way to do it is go from 0000-9999 and it might take a while...
I'm not 100% absolutely certain, but maybe they are unplugging it for about 5 minutes which will ';reboot'; the receiver. Perhaps by doing that it goes back to it's default settings meaning no parental controls, but I'm not sure.

That's all I can think of short of them guessing the code.

You Can't Control Your Dreams Only Direct Them in the Right Direction... (Thoughts)?

As if I was surrounded my mirrors

All I could see was my own tears

My soul finally shattered my prison

So I could see the world when it cries

It's to much for one person to handle

Life, so easy to break and mishandle

When I think I can see myself clearly

As I awake I can choose who I am

So everyone knows I'm inside out

Like the shirt I wear, I'm different

But not one of you can say

    You haven't had one day

Where you wear your shirt inside out

Never knowing what they laugh about

    From the inside looking out

My life, is so inside out...You Can't Control Your Dreams Only Direct Them in the Right Direction... (Thoughts)?
You might not write for grammar, but grammar good or bad will affect what we hear...and ';see';. As such, be careful of typos...';by mirrors';, ';too much';, etc. Your spelling was otherwise very good. Your rhymed couplets were also very good...very natural, almost sounding accidental, which is exactly the way they should sound. One of the two pairs that were not rhymed was at least slant rhyme, the other one stood out because it didn't...and that pair itself was awkward...';When I think....who I am';...because of the way the second line began. It's the only ';odd'; line in the poem, which is otherwise very well done.

....keep writingYou Can't Control Your Dreams Only Direct Them in the Right Direction... (Thoughts)?
Voice confusion. The majority of this is 1st person singular. If you are ';i';, then you can't change to ';It's to much for one person to handle'; for that changes the voice of who is speaking.

If your metaphor is inside out then your beginning rambles and your ending becomes redundant. Either you are talking about what you feels like to be inside out or you are talking about how others feel being inside out. Decide and write again

Will or can an ';on-call'; physician do a direct-admit for pain control?

My doctor sent me to the ER yesterday convinced I was going to have emergency spine surgery. Turns out I didn't need the emergency surgery but do need to see the surgeon this upcoming week. My problem is severe uncontrolled pain with zero relief from the pain meds the ER sent me home with. I'd much rather have the pain controlled at home but it's so severe that I probably should be admitted. I'm not sure if it's my actual doc who's on-call or someone else, but if I explained to the doc the severity could they call the hospital for direct-admit?Will or can an ';on-call'; physician do a direct-admit for pain control?
I think that the first thing they'd do is prescribe something a little stronger to see if that would control the pain before they did a direct admit. They could probably do a direct admit but I think typically that involves a bit more paperwork from the experience that I have had in being directly admitted during business hours. But that was during pregnancy. This is different obviously.

What did you do to your back? And what other methods are you using to attempt to control the pain aside from pain medication? What pain medication was prescribed and in what dosage? Will or can an ';on-call'; physician do a direct-admit for pain control?
An on-call doctor can do an admission for pain control, yet it probably is a good idea to call your doctor first. If he isn't on-call, go on into the emergency room and they can get you admitted from there.

Direct TV and the NFL Sunday Ticket. Weather? Control Boxes?

I'm considering switching from Cable to Direct TV and / for the NFL Sunday Ticket. But, I want to be able to watch different channels in different rooms. Will I need a control box for EACH Television? Also, what about things like weather and disruption of service as well as this NFL Network? Please only comments from someone who has ';been there / done that';. Thanks!Direct TV and the NFL Sunday Ticket. Weather? Control Boxes?
Yes you will need a receiver for every room, the NFL network is awesome if your a football fan you'll watch it about 1/2 the time your watching TV (unless they won't stop talking about Favre, which they've finally quit doing). As for weather disruptions that depends on your signal strength, I have strengths in the low 90% range and I lose my signal maybe once or twice a year only in torrential downpours or if there's alot of lighting I'll get 1 second flickers. I think the minimum for signal strength is 85 or 88 percent so mine is pretty low and I don't have a big problem with it. I definately recommend switching to direct TV nothing beats the Sunday Ticket.Direct TV and the NFL Sunday Ticket. Weather? Control Boxes?
i have direct tv and i cant stand it, the sunday ticket has gone up since we have had it, new prices for different packages and a whole lot of repeat repeat of any movies, and misc items. you dont need a cable box but you do need the dish with a clear path to pick up stations. every time it rains or storms it goes out and then it has to power up again, if there working on phone lines power lines its gone, but the best advice i can give you is check out all your options first, before purchasing directtv also go to www.ripoff.com and see what you find there. good luck
I have had Direct TV for about 9 Years and I Love it and would never change back to cable ever , yes NFL Ticket price has gone up but if are like me a true fan its well worth it especially when you can watch your team every Sunday , and yes will need a box for every TV , its well worth it ENJOY !!
Hi yes you will need receivers for each TV. As far as the weather yes it does affect mine and it will pop off and you will see searching for a signal but this does not happen often unless you are where its extra rainy or windy. I have had mine 2 years and I swear its the best. I know you will love it worth every penny good luck..
